Received with rapturous adoration by an early 20th century Australian audience, many of these dancers made their moves to Australia permanent. It changed the trajectory of Australia’s dance history, and our own Australian Ballet can trace a direct lineage back to the influence of these dancers. Twenty-five years ago, when choreographer Graeme Murphy first created this Aussie Nutcracker, he sought to tell the story of one such dancer.

This Nutcracker moves fluidly through time, as an elderly Clara remembers her youth as a young ballerina in Russia, the heartbreak of love lost on a battlefield, and her eventual, bewildered arrival in Australia. This is a complex story, but one that is told beautifully through movement. Signature gestures such as the way that Clara Leanne Stojmenov and her Beloved Officer Kevin Jackson entwine their wrists together are repeated throughout the ballet. The dancers slide and slip across the floor throughout the ballet, almost as though the traces of a frozen St Petersburg ice rink are threading into Clara’s future.

The partnering work here is lively and expressive, performed with absolute control and real understanding by Stojmenov and Jackson, and then later by Stojmenov and Jarryd Madden. This ballet has been beloved by audiences for more than two decades — and for good reason. Kristian Fredrikson’s innovative design including the integration of historic film footage of dancers from the Borovansky Ballet grounds this dramatic world in known histories.

Stojmenov and Jackson breathe life into these characters, with a partnership that is passionate, tender, and devastatingly tragic. Young dancers from the Australian Ballet School make a fine showing as part of Clara’s past, but it is the dancers at the other end of the career spectrum — the company alumni — who provide a real narrative through-line. Marking their return to the stage as Clara’s elderly friends in Melbourne, and then returning to represent her dancer teachers and supporters at the Imperial Ballet School, admirers of her professional performers and backstage supporters, including Christine Howard, Audrey Nicholls and Colin Peasley are terrific.

Naked ballet may seem like a ridiculous idea, but many people enjoy this form of dance. Choreographers, dancers, fans and critics all have strong opinions both for and against the idea. Why Create Naked Ballet? The whole art of dance is a celebration of the ability, shape and form of the human body. Considering the skin-tight outfits that dancers usually wear it would seem a very small step to simply move to nudity, to show the skin of the dancers and not have the lines concealed in any way.

Natural Nude Scenes Some choreographers even argue that clothing does not make any sense in some dances. During the bedroom scene of Romeo and Juliet, for example, it is more realistic for the lovers who have just been in bed to be portrayed nude. Rite of Spring, with its blatant celebration of sexuality, has often been held up as a ballet that would be more artistically accurate if portions of it were performed by nude dancers.

Often the male dancers are actually wearing dance belts, as close to nude as most dancers ever get. Artistic Nudity Other choreographers and dancers use nudity as a way to attempt to challenge or move beyond prudish attitudes, such as La Pudeur des Icebergs by Daniel Leveille Danse. The objective is, according to the creator, ”.. By Rachel Hanson Choreographer Dancers all have their own grace and style, but dance partnerships often take on a life of their own. These dance partnerships, even though some of the dancers are no longer living, are immortal. The following are what may be considered the top 10 most memorable dance partnerships of all time. Ballet The most famous ballet partnerships produce exquisite duets onstage, with all the passion and grace that embody ballet.

Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev Fonteyn and Nureyev are certainly the most-loved and celebrated ballet partnership of all time. Individually, Nureyev and Fonteyn were each worthy of joining the ranks of greats like Pavlova, Nijinsky, and Diaghilev, but when Nureyev and Fonteyn danced together, magic happened onstage. Nureyev’s youthful, brazen force, and Fonteyn’s refined elegance made their partnership a success from the start.

One of their most famous performances is the ballet Romeo and Juliet. Onstage, they were more like one entity than two separate dancers. Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gelsey Kirkland Two of the greatest ballet dancers in New York at the time of their partnership, Baryshnikov was an exemplary partner for Gelsey Kirkland. Kirkland, one of the ‘Balanchine ballerinas’ needed an extremely strong partner for her pas de deux numbers because of her virtuoso talent.

Baryshnikov proved able to match her onstage as his own talents in ballet were extraordinary.

Ageing, she believes, is largely an attitude.

What a person do for a living is not necessarily defining that person in general, but with dancers, it tends to give you quite a hint — we take our job very seriously, and it does take up most of our time. As a natural consequence, lots of dancers seems to be dating other dancers. On dating other dancers or not: I do enjoy living with someone that understand my profession and has the expertise to help me and discuss professional issues.

This is especially important since we are working in the same company, which sometimes results in issues coming up between us as dancers. These are important not to bring home afterwards. To me, this is where work relationships can get a little tricky. When you work together and see each other all the time, the time spent together after work could get a bit boring and routine.
